For a magnetic flue thermometer on a stainless steel wood-heater flue in Australia, the usual placement is:
- On the first section of single-skin flue above the heater
- About 300 mm (12 inches) above the top of the stove
- Mounted on the outside surface of the flue pipe
- Safety Tethering (Highly Recommended): Magnets can lose their magnetism at extremely high temperatures, causing the gauge to fall. Most flue thermometers have small eyelet holes on the side or a center loop. Use a short length of metal wire or an inexpensive sheet metal screw through the eyelet to secure the thermometer to the pipe so it doesn’t fall off.
